The Weekly Toll: Death in the American Workplace

This week we remember those who died on the job the latter half of April 2014.  We mourn with their families and offer our love and support if needed.

April 15, 2014 - Madison, SD - 60 year old Gerald Ottoson was killed on the job when the dump truck he was driving had a tire blow-out, causing the vehicle to crash. He was working for Helena Inc. as a truck driver.

April 16 - McEwen, TN - 23 year old Rodney Edwards was killed on the job and three others injured when an explosion occurred at the Rio Ammunitions plant in McEwen where he was employed. The explosion occurred during a cartridge loading operation.

April 17 - Issaquah, WA - Gary Jones was found unresponsive in his Lakeside Industries, Inc. truck in a parking lot. He died of a heart related medical event.

April 17 - Seattle, WA - 30 year old Dr. Christen Adams died of an unknown cause while working as an anesthesiologist at the University of Washington.  His cause of death is pending and no other information was found.

April 17 - Puyallup, WA - 41 year old Chris Kerns died after being struck by an impaired motorist while walking back to the dealership he was working for. He was employed by Korum Automotive Group, Inc. dba Korum Automotive.

April 17 - Ruth, MI - 58 year old Michael Rempp of Elwell was killed on the job when he fell from an opening in a grain tower owned by Cooperative Elevator Company. He was employed by an out of county subcontractor working to dismantle a feed mill leg when he fell.

April 17 - Brooklyn, NY - 52 year old Swadh Maged was shot to death behind the counter of 427 Central Avenue Deli and Grocery, where he worked, by an individual who he had been arguing with before he went to work.

April 18 - Houston, TX - 51 year old Rene Almeida was shot to death while working as a security guard for Leawood Condominiums. He got into a scuffle with a person who was trying to get into the gated community and that person was able to get Almeida's weapon and shot him.

April 19 - Keene, NH - 46 year old Nate DeMond of Fitzwilliam was fatally electrocuted by a hanging power line near Keene State College Athletic Complex.  He was a ground's keeper for Keene State College.

April 20 - Kill Devil Hills, NC - 53 year old Mark Harvey suffered severe head trauma on April 13 when his Atlantic Cab collided with a parked jeep. He was found inside his cab in a private home's driveway.

April 20 - Midland, TX - An unidentified worker from Boerne, TX died from an unknown incident at an oil rig owned by Sidewinder Drilling.  Attempts to locate the employee's name and other information has not been successful.

April 21 - Roscoe, SD - 79 year old Arnold Schurr died in a farm related incident of which details are unknown.

April 21 - Baton Rouge, LA - 22 year old Will E. Wright, Jr. of Hammond died on the job when a gravel filled dump truck he was driving veered off the road and into a ditch.  It is not known who he was employed by.

April 22 - Edgewood, MD - 61 year old Willie Stevenson died after being injured in a 'grass cutting' incident while riding a lawn mower at Aberdeen Proving Grounds where he was an Army civilian employee.

April 22 - Damon, TX - 52 year old Hugh Ferguson died after collapsing while fighting a house fire.  He was Damon Fire Chief. It appears he collapsed from a medical event.

April 22 - Garfield, KS - 67 year old Don Cates of Claflin died on the job when the crop dusting plane he was piloting hit a power line and crashed into a ditch.  He was a pilot for Pratt's Farmers Spraying Service. 

April 22 - Rankin, TX - An unidentified worker died on the job in an equipment related incident at a drilling rig near Rankin. Attempts to locate more information have been unsuccessful.

April 22 - Port Lavaca, TX - 26 year old Christopher Adames was killed on the job when he fell about 25 feet while performing routine maintenance at Formosa Plastics Corp. plant.  He worked for an unnamed subcontractor.

April 25 - Parker, SD - 21 year old Brady DeStigter of Lennox died on the job when he was pinned by a skid steer machine he was operating. He was working for Turner County Dairy in Parker.

April 25 - Dubuque, IA - 19 year old Colin Jackson of Bellevue was killed on the job when be became trapped in a piece of industrial equipment while working for Jackson Concrete Pumping in Dubuque.

April 26 - Commiskey, IN - 74 year old Jerry L. Spicer was killed on the job when he was struck by a 1,000 pound log while making a delivery to Baxter Lumber Mill. He was the owner/operator of Spicer Logging and was found on the ground next to the huge log.

April 26 - Maxwell, NE - 52 year old Heidi Craig died after becoming pinned under a large round hay bale while working on her family farm.

April 27 - Houston, TX - 26 year old Elmer Oscar Barrera died on the job when he fell into a fortune cookie dough mixer machine while working for Wonton Food Corporation.

April 27 - Surf City, NC - 53 year old Larry Kinkade of Holly Ridgewas killed on the job when an excavator rolled and pinned him in a pond on a construction site. His employer is unknown.

April 28 - Williston, ND - 20 year old Zach Buckles of Glasgow, MT died after being found unresponsive over an open crude oil tank cover. It is expected that he died of exposure to toxic fumes being emitted from the crude. He was employed by Black Gold Testers at Continental Resources well site.

April 28 - Elko, NV - 53 year old Richard C. Otto died on the job when his clothing became tangled in the drill steel of a jackleg drill he was operating. He was employed at the Midas Mine, owned by Klondex Mines, Ltd.

April 29 - Gretna, LA - 55 year old Blake J. Helmer was a cab driver for Glenn's Cab Company when he was shot to death by two passengers who attempted to rob him. Both passengers have been arrested for his murder.

April 30 - Blue Ash, OH - 65 year old Donald J. Stevenson of Lima died on the job when he was pinned between a wall and metal loading ramp while working at SpartanNash Warehouse in Blue Ash.

April 30 - Orla, TX - 46 year old Amos B. Ortega of Artesia, NM and Roberto A. Mandela of El Paso, TX were killed on the job when a pressure explosion occurred in a well head at RKI oil site in Orla. It is unclear who was their employer.
